PE: Literature Basics Settings
Literature Basics Week
Along with characters and plot, setting is one of the most important choices we make when we write. In the most basic terms, setting is where your literary work takes place. It's up to you, as the author, to use it and mold it to fit the needs of your writing, make it more than just a backdrop to your prose or poetry.
A good setting becomes like a character itself. It can be express moods, offer comfort or hindrance. The setting can even be the main antagonist - consider the Overlook Hotel in Stephen King's The Shining, or the island in the 2000 Tom Hanks' film, Cast Away. In both of these examples, the protagonist(s)

Fighting the Bloat: Tips for Writing Strong, Lean Poetry and Prose
Hello, everyone! Ross here, for the Writing Basics week hosted by CRLiterature (https://www.deviantart.com/crliterature) at projecteducate (https://www.deviantart.com/projecteducate), and I'm talking about writing less. If you write from time to time in your life, it's certain that you either 1) are about to write too much, 2) are currently writing too much, or 3) have just recently written too much. We're going to help fix that.
Obviously I am not saying you should write less often, or write fewer words overall. I am saying that you need to make those words count if you want to be an effective writer: bloat is bad. Those of y

What are Adoptables?
Adoptables are character designs that can be adopted or purchased by other deviants. The cost for these can be a set price or are sold in an auction-like manner (highest bid wins).
For a more in-depth look at what Adoptables are, check out GinkgoWerkstatt (https://www.deviantart.com/ginkgowerkstatt)'s PE: Adoptables article.
Marketing Your Adoptables
With the adoptables trend growing larger and larger each day, it can be difficult to sell your adoptables as well as yourself. In this article, I have listed a few tips with ways to market your adoptables.
1. Start Small
It is best to start small if you have never been into the adopables "scene".

Lighting in Portrait Photography
People and Portraits week
Hello everyone,
I'm writing this tutorial of sorts, for all of you portrait photographers out there seeking advice about the lighting in your photographs. First off let me be clear in saying that I am no expert, or rather I do not claim to be, I sometimes do things in unusual ways, and my tips and advice are definitely not the only ones you should follow. This journal is just me giving you my take on how to get great lighting for your shots :)
1. Never shoot when the sun is at its highest peak.
Depending on where you live and your climate, this might vary, but I usually never shoot between the hours of 12-4 unles

Photographing People on your Travels
People & Portrait Photography
Trying to photograph people within a country other than the one you are accustomed to can bring a whole new set of difficulties far beyond lighting, composition and frame. Here are a few tips that I've personally learned along the way which have not only inspired me to get out there and photograph more people, but also to approach new people and become more confident..
Be Sensitive
It's very important that you learn the customs of a country so as not to offend anybody when attempting to take or request their photograph. There are often many street entertainers in big cities and musicians that busk and req
People & Portrait Photography
Here's a short piece on the do's and dont's of modeling, or rather some basic tips on how to model to the best of your abilities, and make the best out of your shootings. This advice is coming from the perspective of a portrait photographer, who has dealt closely with models of all types (amateur, professional), and who has seen the good and the bad.
DO: Look at yourself in a mirror, study your features, try different expressions, model poses for yourself. As silly as it may seem, it helps. It helps for you to see what you look like, what works for your face and body, and what does not. Practicing in front

Check your Angles
Avoid unflattering angles, don't frame your model with their arms or legs chopped off unless it works for the image. If in doubt, fully frame them and do the chopping afterwards in post-processing! Don't forget to check that the tops of their heads and their feet are in focus. Missing feet are disconcerting!
Be the Director
As the Photographer, most people will be looking to you for direction. There's no time to be shy when you're behind the camera! Keep calm to help your model remain relaxed but make sure they're not made to feel awkward if you lack giving instruction. Pose them w

Hitching a Ride with Dialogue
You probably know what dialogue is. Even if you've never thought about it in fancy, official terms like "dialogue in writing is the representation of speech between two or more speakers", and have always thought of it more like "people talking", you more or less have the gist of it. Sometimes authors can pull off a story that forgoes dialogue, but those are in the firm minority. The fact that dialogue is such a widely used device means there are a few rules to it, most of which are easy. However, this fact has never stopped people like you or I from royally messing them up.
So, how does it work?
There are four basic aspects to dialogue:

Ever feel like no matter what you do, you just. can't. write?
You're not alone. Many other writers have been in the same situation, left frustrated and exhausted trying to get through this. But what can you do about it?
What is Writer's Block? According to wikipedia
"Writer's block is a condition, primarily associated with writing, in which an author loses the ability to produce new work. The condition ranges in difficulty from coming up with original ideas to being unable to produce work for years.
